Basic Computer Workshops
Basic Computer:
(1 hour)
Prerequisites: none
Note: Mastery of this workshop is required
before attending other Computer Workshops
This hands-on class is essential for a new computer user,
and will also be a good refresher for someone who’s
returning to the world of computers. Besides learning about
the basic anatomy of a window, you learn the fundamental features
of Windows, including manipulation of windows, the taskbar,
and toolbars. In addition, you learn the basics of multitasking
and the saving/retrieving of files. Mouse skills such as clicking,
double-clicking, right-clicking and dragging are also covered.
Internet Job Search:
(1 hour)
Prerequisites: Keyboard and Mouse Skills
This workshop shows you how to navigate several popular job search websites including: CareerPoint’s job listings, Job Central, and Masslive.com.
Introduction to Word:
(two 2 hour sessions)
Prerequisites: Basic Computer
You expand upon your knowledge of basic word processing in
this most popular word-processing application. You learn the
skills necessary to create a résumé, cover letter
and other short to medium length documents. Covered topics
include cut, copy, and paste, basic editing and formatting,
page setup including margins, tab and indent settings, line
spacing, bullets and numbered lists, printing and proofing
tools, including Spell Check.
Introduction to Excel:
(two 3 hour sessions)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Word
Intro to Excel (2 parts) Prerequisite/Knowledge: Introduction to Word. Part 1: Learn the basic concepts and structure of a spreadsheet using this most popular spreadsheet application. Topics include entering labels, values and the different types of value cells. In addition, you will learn basic formatting and editing changes as well as how to save a workbook. Part 2: Learn how to produce several worksheets and enhance spreadsheets through new formatting techniques. Concepts reviewed will include the making of formulas and functions.
Surfing the 'Net:
(2-½ hours)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Windows
Does the thought of "hopping online" make your
toes curl? Do you need to do online research but have no idea
where to begin? This workshop will introduce you to Internet
Explorer and Netscape - two of the browsers you can use to
search the Web. Learn how to navigate through a website using
hyperlinks and the address bar. Want to learn how to have
your browser open to your favorite website? Sign up for this

Understanding Your PC:
(2-½ hours)
Note: A basic understanding of how to use
the Internet is required
In this workshop, learn to recognize different types of hardware,
expand your computer vocabulary, and understand computer store
flyers/ads.
Keeping Your Computer Safe:
(2-½ hours)
Every day we hear of new threats to our computers—viruses,
spyware, adware, hackers—the list seems endless. In
this valuable workshop, we will help you understand what each
of these things is, and guide you through the maze of products
available to protect your computer and information.
Digital Camera Basics:
(3 hours)
Prerequisites: Basic Computer
Are you in the market for a new digital camera and stymied
by all the choices out there? Do you have a new (or not-so-new)
digital camera still sitting in its box because you have no
idea how to use it? Are you a pretty good 35mm camera user,
stepping into the world of digital photography for the first
time? Have you taken some digital pictures, but don't know
what to do next? If you've answered "yes" to any
of these questions, this workshop is for you! We will cover
3 basic topics in this workshop: how to choose the right camera
for your needs; how to take a picture with a digital camera;
and how to get those pictures off the camera to save, print,
or share with others.
Participants are encouraged to bring their digital camera
and instruction manual to the class!
Advanced Computer Workshops
Intermediate Windows: File Management (3 hours)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Word
Note: It is highly recommended that you
have good basic Windows skills and have a general understanding
of how and where files are saved.
Learn the basics of file management including the creation
of folders, moving files, renaming files, and the multiple
opening and printing of files. Instruction of the critical
Windows Explorer and My Computer is covered. In addition,
you learn how to create shortcuts to the desktop and various
menus. Because good file management skills are virtually essential
when using computers, this is a valuable workshop.
One More Word: Tips and Tricks
for Using Word (2 1/2 hours)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Word
Once you have mastered the basics of using Word, you're ready
to learn some of the tricks the "masters" use! Keyboard
shortcuts, the wonders of the right mouse button, AutoCorrect
and AutoText, headers and footers, copying and pasting from
sources other than Word, inserting symbols and special characters,
and drag 'n drop are among the topics covered.
Mail Merge in Word:
(3 hours)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Word
Participants will not only learn the basics of mail merging,
but also how to enhance a mail merge by using queries. In
addition, participants will perform a mail merge between Word
and a table stored in an Access file. Creating envelopes and
mailing labels are also covered.
Columns and Tables in Word:
(3 hours)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Word
Using columns and tables in a Word document can expertly
line up your text. Learn how to make several different kinds
of columns in Word, including newspaper columns, snaking columns,
and tabular columns.
Creating Forms and Templates
in Word: (2 hours)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Word
If you find yourself re-creating similar documents over and
over again, you may find that creating a template will save
you loads of time. Create that document just once, save it
as a template, then base new documents on that template. We
will explore just where it is that Microsoft puts their templates,
so you can make changes at a later date, if necessary. We
will also use some of the Microsoft Word form fields, like
check boxes and drop-down lists.
Database Features of Excel:
(3 hours)
Prerequisites: Excel: More Spreadsheets
In this class, you learn many of the powerful database features
of Excel. Topics covered include multi-column sorting, various
features of Data Forms and AutoFilters.
Creating Charts in Excel:
(3 hours)
Prerequisites: Excel: More Spreadsheets
You know that phrase “A picture is worth 1,000 words?”
Sometimes a chart can present your data much more clearly
than a spreadsheet could. Participants will learn how to create
column and pie charts, and how to edit and format those charts.
Emphasis is placed on the mechanics of creating charts using
the Chart Wizard.
Using PowerPoint:
(3 hours)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Word
Note: A good grasp of general word-processing
skills is required
PowerPoint is used for making presentations to groups. Learn
to create multi slide presentations that encompass text, graphics
and sound. Become familiar with animation techniques for slides
and elements on the slide. Proficiency with Word is required
for this workshop.
Using Publisher:
(3 hours)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Word
Note: Knowledge of copying, pasting and
working with multiple documents is required
Desktop publishing can be easy using Publisher. Learn how
to create newsletters & brochures using the Publisher
catalog and then inserting and modifying text and images.
Proficiency with Word is required for this workshop.
Using Outlook:
(3 hours)
Prerequisites: Introduction to Word
Note: Familiarity with basic e-mail concepts
is required
Outlook is one of the most helpful tools included in Microsoft
Office. Outlook organizes your e-mail, contacts, calendar,
tasks, and notes. Mastering Outlook will help you become a
more organized individual - if only the rest of life could
be managed this completely!
Using Access:
(three 3-hour sections)
Prerequisites: Excel: More Spreadsheets
This workshop is designed for those people who need to effectively
keep track of large volumes of information. You learn the
fundamental concepts of a relational database. Emphasis is
placed on how to create basic tables, queries, forms, and
reports.
Mastering Online Auctions:
Part One (Buying) (3 hours)
Prerequisites: Some familiarity with the Internet
Allow our experienced "eBay tour guide" to take
you through the mazes of online bartering and show you how
to get the most for your goods and money. Whether you aim
to be a professional barterer or just an occasional customer,
Mastering Online Auctions has something to offer everyone.
Mastering Online Auctions:
Part Two (Selling) (3 hours)
Prerequisites: Some familiarity with the Internet
Recommended: Mastering Online Auctions: Part
One (Buying)
Once you've had a chance to explore the world of online buying,
you're ready to start selling your goods. Whether you're cleaning
out your basement or starting a business, selling on eBay
can be a daunting venture. Come learn the in's and out's of
making money online!
Web Page Fundamentals (3 hours)
Prerequisites: A good understanding of the Internet
Recommended: Intro to Word
Do you want to learn a little HTML? Have you been itching
to try your hand at building a basic web site? This workshop
will give you the chance to do just that! We will create a
document using word processing software you already have on
your computer, and insert tags and links to turn that document
into a web page. We will also address FTP software, and how
to choose and use HTML editors.
