Training Grant Opportunities
A number of specialized assistance and training programs are available to eligible
customers to help them obtain marketable skills and
move on to careers in mostly high demand occupations.
To learn more about opportunities available through
the Workforce Investment Act, Trade Adjustment Act,
and other programs, such as those that provide support
and benefits for Veterans or people living with disabilities,
registered CareerPoint customers should attend a Training
Opportunities Workshop (please see calendar for times).
Eligible customers can learn how they might receive
financial assistance, if funding is available, to enter
occupational and on the job training programs that last
one year or less. After attending the Training Opportunities
workshop, customers may meet with a Career Counselor
to learn more about these programs.
The Hiring Incentive Training Grant helps eligible
Massachusetts employers pay the training costs of newly
hired workers who were unemployed for one year or more,
or who have been laid-off one year or less without a
call back notice from their most recent employer. In
addition, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit Program provides
federal tax credits to employers who hire job seekers
in certain targeted groups. Many job seekers are eligible
for these programs, and have the choice of letting potential
employers know about them.

PATRICK-MURRAY ADMINISTRATION STRENGTHENS APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAMS ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH
DEVENS — Thursday, August 12, 2010 – Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray joined Joanne F. Goldstein, Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development at the Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators (MAVA) annual meeting yesterday in Devens. As part of the meeting agenda to discuss planning of the upcoming school year, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development (EOLWD) announced an Articulation Agreement between their Division of Apprenticeship Training (DAT), MAVA, and apprenticeship programs across the Commonwealth.
Following remarks and discussion led by Lt. Governor Murray, Secretary Goldstein and representatives from the Carpenters, Laborers, and Sheet Metal Workers signed the Articulation Agreement.
“The agreement aims to promote a seamless transition between registered apprenticeship programs and eligible graduates of state-approved Vocational High Schools, allowing for recruits to receive the skills and training they need to successfully enter the workforce,” said Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray.
To be considered for the program, a student must have fulfilled the state MCAS requirement, have graduated from a Chapter-74 approved vocational education program, and must be committed to continuing the apprenticeship career path. Additional credit will be issued to students who are punctual, have a demonstrated attendance rate of 90% or better, show a proficiency of relevant skills, and have a recommendation from an instructor pertinent to their training.
“Across the Commonwealth, we want to ensure that apprentices are laboring in safe working environments, are paid correctly, and are receiving both on-the-job training as well as related education classes,” said Secretary Goldstein. “This agreement will permit any graduating student who meets the admission requirements to readily advance into a first year apprenticeship.”
MAVA is a professional association of educational leaders working in Massachusetts’ schools. They administer career and technical programs with a focus on experiential learning, preparing students to compete in a global economy. Please see www.mava.us for more info.
